Choosing composite decking for your Fayetteville, Raleigh, or Durham deck means deciding between the three major brands: Trex, TimberTech, and Azek. After building 200+ composite decks across North Carolina over 20 years, here's an honest comparison of what works best in our climate.

Why We're Trex Pro Certified Contractors

We install all three brands, but we're Trex Pro certified because Trex delivers the best combination of performance, price, and availability for North Carolina homeowners. Here's why:

Trex Advantages

Proven Track Record: Trex has been making composite decking since 1996 - longer than any competitor. Their early products had issues (first-generation composites did), but modern Trex (2010+) performs exceptionally well in NC's climate.

Best Value: Trex costs 10-20% less than comparable TimberTech or Azek products while delivering 90% of the performance for most applications.

Widest Selection: Three product lines (Enhance, Select, Transcend) at different price points. Colors and finishes to match any home style.

Environmental Leader: 95% recycled content (reclaimed wood and plastic film). Keeps 500+ million pounds of plastic out of landfills annually.

Superior Warranty: 25-year warranty against fading, staining, mold, and structural issues. Transferable to new homeowners.

Heat Management: Trex's "cool decking" technology (Select and Transcend lines) reflects heat better than first-generation composites. Still gets warm, but not as hot as pure PVC products like Azek.

Product Line Breakdown

Trex Transcend (Premium Tier):

  • Premium line with best scratch resistance
  • Deepest color saturation and grain patterns
  • Superior fade resistance
  • Widest color selection (12+ options)

TimberTech: The Middle Ground

TimberTech (owned by Azek since 2020) occupies the middle ground between Trex and Azek:

TimberTech Advantages

Capped Polymer Technology: Their AZEK line (confusingly, TimberTech sells Azek-branded products) has excellent stain resistance.

Premium Aesthetics: Some homeowners prefer TimberTech's color palette and grain patterns.

Good Performance: Similar durability to Trex in most categories.

Strong Warranty: 25-30 year warranties depending on product line.

TimberTech Disadvantages

Inconsistent Branding: The Azek acquisition created confusing product lines. "TimberTech" and "AZEK" products overlap.

Price: 15-25% more expensive than comparable Trex products.

Limited Availability: Longer lead times for materials in North Carolina.

Heat Retention: Some lines (especially capped composites) retain heat similar to Azek.

Azek: Maximum Performance, Maximum Cost

Azek is 100% PVC (no wood content), making it the most durable but also most expensive option.

Azek Advantages

Zero Wood Content: Won't rot, warp, or splinter ever. Termites won't touch it.

Best Stain Resistance: PVC surface resists staining better than wood-plastic composites.

Excellent Scratch Resistance: Hardest surface of all three brands.

30-Year Warranty: Industry-leading warranty coverage.

Best for Marine/Waterfront: If your deck is near water (pools, waterfront), Azek handles constant moisture exposure better than composites.

Azek Disadvantages

Extreme Heat Retention: PVC retains heat more than wood-plastic composites. Dark Azek colors can reach 140-160°F in direct summer sun - too hot to walk barefoot. This is the biggest complaint we hear from Azek owners in North Carolina.

30-40% More Expensive: Azek costs $45-70+ per sq ft installed vs Trex's $25-55 range.

Expansion/Contraction: PVC expands and contracts more with temperature changes, requiring specific installation techniques.

Less Eco-Friendly: 100% virgin PVC vs Trex's 95% recycled content.

Overkill for Most Applications: Unless you have specific needs (marine environment, extreme wear), Azek's advantages don't justify the cost premium for most homeowners.

Real-World Performance in North Carolina

Heat and Sun Exposure

North Carolina's summer heat is brutal on decking. Here's what we see:

Trex: Moderate heat retention. Dark colors (Spiced Rum, Lava Rock) reach 110-120°F in direct sun. Lighter colors (Gravel Path, Foggy Wharf) stay 90-100°F. The "cool decking" technology in Select and Transcend lines makes a noticeable difference.

TimberTech: Similar to Trex depending on product line. Capped polymer lines retain slightly more heat.

Azek: Highest heat retention. Dark colors become too hot to walk barefoot. If you want dark decking in full sun, Azek is the worst choice. Lighter colors perform better but still warmer than Trex.

Our Recommendation: For NC, choose lighter colors in any brand if your deck gets full afternoon sun. For dark colors, Trex is the coolest-running option.

Moisture and Humidity

All three brands handle North Carolina's humidity well, but differences emerge:

Trex: Excellent moisture resistance. Early Trex (pre-2010) had mold issues, but modern Trex has anti-mold technology. We see zero mold problems on Trex decks installed in the last 10 years.

TimberTech: Similar moisture performance to Trex.

Azek: Best moisture resistance due to zero wood content. Ideal for pool decks, waterfront properties, or areas with standing water.

Scratch and Stain Resistance

Trex Transcend: Very good scratch resistance with shellguard protection. Resists staining from typical sources (food, drinks, mildew).

TimberTech: Similar performance to Trex depending on line.

Azek: Best scratch and stain resistance. The PVC surface is harder and less porous. Best choice if you have large dogs with sharp nails or frequently move heavy furniture on the deck.

Slip Resistance When Wet

All three brands have textured surfaces that provide good traction when wet, but:

Azek has slightly better slip resistance due to its embossing pattern.

Trex and TimberTech are comparable - both provide adequate slip resistance for safety.

None are perfectly slip-proof when icy, but that's true of any outdoor surface.

Cost Comparison for Typical 200 sq ft Deck

Here's relative pricing ranges for a 200 sq ft deck in Fayetteville/Raleigh:

Trex Enhance: Budget-friendly composite

  • Entry-level Trex quality
  • Includes: Framing, decking, basic railing, stairs
  • Good option for value-conscious homeowners

Trex Select: Best value (RECOMMENDED)

  • Optimal balance of price and performance
  • Includes: Same scope as above
  • Most popular choice for primary homes

Trex Transcend: Premium composite

  • Highest Trex performance tier
  • Includes: Same scope with premium railing options
  • Best for high-end homes

TimberTech (comparable lines): 15-25% premium over equivalent Trex

  • Similar scope and performance
  • Different aesthetic options available

Azek: 30-40% premium over Trex

  • Maximum durability for special applications
  • Best for waterfront or extreme use cases

Every deck is unique. Size, design complexity, railing selection, and site conditions affect final cost. Request a free estimate for exact pricing on your project.

Warranty Comparison

All three brands offer strong warranties, but details matter:

Trex: 25-year residential warranty covering fade, stain, and structural issues. Transferable once to new homeowner (important for resale).

TimberTech: 25-30 years depending on product line. Similar coverage to Trex.

Azek: 30-year warranty with best coverage terms. They're more likely to honor warranty claims based on industry reputation.

Reality Check: Warranty claims are rare for all three brands when properly installed. The warranty differences shouldn't be your primary decision factor.

Which Brand Should You Choose?

Choose Trex (Our Recommendation) If:

  • You want the best value (most homeowners)
  • You prefer environmentally friendly products
  • You need good availability and fast lead times
  • You want proven performance at reasonable cost
  • Your deck gets significant sun (better heat management than Azek)

Choose TimberTech If:

  • You prefer their specific color palette
  • Your contractor has better pricing/availability
  • You want specific features in their premium lines
  • Price is not a primary concern

Choose Azek If:

  • Your deck is near pool or waterfront (constant moisture)
  • You need maximum scratch resistance (large dogs, heavy use)
  • Budget is not a constraint
  • Your deck is fully shaded (heat retention less of an issue)
  • You want the longest possible warranty

Our Recommendation for North Carolina

For 90% of North Carolina homeowners, Trex Select or Transcend delivers the best combination of performance, price, and longevity. The cost savings vs TimberTech and Azek (10-40% less) can be used for larger decks, better railing systems, or other home improvements.

Azek makes sense for specific applications (waterfront, commercial use), but it's overkill and needlessly expensive for most residential decks.

TimberTech is fine but doesn't offer enough differentiation to justify its price premium over Trex.

Installation Quality Matters More Than Brand

Here's the truth: A poorly installed Azek deck will fail faster than a properly installed Trex deck. Installation quality matters more than brand differences.

We're Trex Pro certified, meaning we:

  • Follow manufacturer-specific installation protocols
  • Use correct fastener spacing for expansion/contraction
  • Properly slope decking for drainage
  • Use code-compliant framing and ledger attachment
